Common Diet Problems: Why Most Diets Fail

Almost everyone who has ever been on a diet will have been on a “failed” diet. A failed diet is a diet that people manage to stick with only for a few days or weeks and then give up on. Common reasons for giving up on a diet include the fact that the diet was impractical or there was a lack of commitment to the diet.

Why Diets Fail

Diets may fail to achieve long-term weight loss if a dieter follows a diet plan that fails to re-educate their eating habits or recommends that they consume such a small amount of calories that they are left feeling constantly hungry.

Common Failed Diet Problems

Failed diets are bad for two reasons4. First, failed diets have a psychological effect. Many dieters work hard to attempt to achieve weight loss and will find it demoralizing when they fail to lose weight. Second, embarking on numerous diets is bad for a dieter’s health.

Avoiding Common Diet Problems

If a dieter desires to lose weight and retain their weight loss efforts, they must adhere to a balanced, nutritious diet. A balanced diet comprises proper meals as opposed to meal replacements, such as diet shakes. It should comprise foods that an individual likes and would usually eat, regardless of whether or not they were on a diet. A diet should re-educate a dieter’s eating habits. For example, an individual may learn replace high-fat foods with low-fat foods.

An effective diet plan should include exercise as getting active aids an individual in burning off excess fat and the muscle that they will build while exercising will use up calories, even during resting.

A complex diet plan that significantly deviates from a healthy, balanced diet is not required to achieve weight loss. The most successful diets are those that enable an individual to eat an amount of calories that allows for sustainable dieting – not starving.
